TRU’s path to zero carbon: the Low-Carbon District Energy System (LCDES)

Discover TRU's bold journey to zero carbon with the Low-Carbon District Energy System (LCDES). In partnership with Creative Energy and BC Hydro, we're transforming our Kamloops campus into a model of sustainability. The LCDES will replace outdated natural gas boilers with state-of-the-art electrical heating, significantly reducing our carbon footprint.

This innovative system will offset over 100,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the next 30 years, the equivalent of planting a 4,000-acre forest. Once complete, the system is forecast to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from all campus buildings by 95 percent compared with 2020 levels. 

Additionally, all new campus buildings (that are government majority-funded) connected to the LCDES will be LEED Gold certified, ensuring the highest standards in energy efficiency and environmental design.

Three things you can do

When it’s time to get new systems or major appliances on your property — or replace old ones — consider ones that don’t rely too heavily on natural gas; for example heat pumps, hot water tanks, car charging ports or solar PV panels.

Learn about low carbon developments on campus so you can inform you about cutting-edge technologies and the systems used to reduce carbon use — such as the Low-Carbon District Energy System and the last three major campus buildings built (Nursing and Public Health, Industrial Training and Technology, and Brown Family House of Learning).

If you are thinking of developing a property, consider doing so in a location that makes it easy to access your daily needs, such as work, recreation and shopping. This reduces your need for a car and increases the likelihood you will walk or bicycle.
