Andrew Fergus joined the Bob Gaglardi School of Business and Economics in 2007. The founding chair of the Human Enterprise and Innovation department and an exemplary leader, he received TRU's Chair Leadership Award in 2020. He also served as MBA program coordinator and chaired the Research Ethics Board. Andrew's research focused on organizational dynamics and sustainable development, and he was excited to collaborate on a new project on slavery. Known for his innovative teaching approaches, he will be remembered by students and colleagues for playing with Lego at work — as a certified Lego Serious Play facilitator. Wise, fun, kind and brave, Andrew believed in the magic of life. Campus flags will fly at half-mast in his memory on Friday, Sept. 13.

To mark National Indigenous People's Day, on Friday, June 21 the Secwépemc Nation flag (eagle staff recognizing all 17 Secwépemc bands with 17 feathers) will be flown outside the Campus Activity Centre, and the Canadian and Provincial flags on the Campus Green will be exchanged for the Inuit and Métis flags. The Tk’emlúps flag can be seen on the corner of McGill and Summit as usual.

Braeden Mahar was a student within TRU’s Nursing department. He is deeply missed by his close-knit cohort, and the faculty and staff across campus whose lives he personally touched. Braeden volunteered for Sammy’s Forgotten Felines, a cat rescue in Kamloops. Family, friends or students who wish to honour Braeden are welcome to donate to Sammy’s, and view the flags on campus which will be lowered to half-mast in Braeden’s memory on Sunday, April 28.

Kim Moshenko joined the University and Employment Preparation department at TRU in 1995. For Kim, teaching math was not just a vocation — it was a calling. Her UPrep students thought of her as knowledgeable, compassionate and fair. She will be deeply missed by her colleagues in the Faculty of Education and Social Work, and remembered for her kindness, her commitment to helping students, and her willingness to support others and share her time and experience with anyone who needed it. Her contributions to the TRU community carry on through the lives of the people she has touched. Campus flags will be lowered to half-mast on Saturday, April 27 in her memory.

James McMechan was a Bachelor of Social Work student within the Faculty of Education and Social Work. Students, faculty and staff who knew James describe him as a considerate and caring person who was truly dedicated to helping the world around him. After a years-long battle with cancer, James died on Oct. 2, 2023. Campus flags will be lowered to half-mast in his memory on Monday, March 25, on what would have been his 48th birthday.

To honour the memory of the Right Honourable Martin Brian Mulroney, PC, CC, GOQ, former prime minister of Canada, who passed away on Thursday, Feb. 29, campus flags will be flown at half-mast until sunset on the day of the funeral service, March 23, 2024.

To honour the memory of the Honourable Ed Broadbent, P.C., C.C., campus flags will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset from Monday, Jan. 15 to sunset on Wednesday, Jan. 17 and well as on Saturday, Jan. 28, the day of the memorial service.

Dec. 9, 2023

Owyn McInnis was a psychology major in the Bachelor of Arts program in the Faculty of Arts. An athlete, he was a proud member of the WolfPack family and represented TRU on the men’s volleyball team. Owyn will be remembered and greatly missed by family, friends, teammates and faculty as a young man who brightened the day of anyone lucky enough to talk with him. His legacy will live on through the Owyn McInnis Memorial Men's Volleyball Athletic Award (tru.ca/owyn). Campus flags will be lowered to half-mast in his memory on Saturday, Dec. 9, the day of his memorial service.

Nick Pawliuk began teaching literature at TRU in 1997. Known for his wickedly ironic perspective on life, Nick was a beloved instructor who engaged students in bygone centuries by finding the humour in the human condition. His students say his humility, enthusiasm and ability to translate complex theories into relatable concepts fuelled their decisions to pursue a degree in literature. Generous with his time and insight, and supportive of his colleagues, he encouraged all to take time for self-care. After 26 years of impassioned teaching, Nick will be remembered by countless students, alumni and colleagues past and present. Campus flags will be lowered from sunrise to sunset on Monday, Nov. 27 in Nick's memory.

Samuel Ayomide Olaleka was a student in the Master of Business Administration program in the Bob Gaglardi School of Business and Economics. He came to TRU in March of 2021 from his home in Egbe, Nigeria. Fondly called AY by friends and classmates, he was known as caring, loving and humble. Outside of class, he worked in a support home and loved playing soccer and basketball or hanging with friends. He made those around him better by how he lived his life. Campus flags will be lowered from sunrise to sunset in his memory on Saturday, Oct. 29.

This is a special request as we cannot accommodate more than one flag on the CAC flag pole. The Tk’emlúps flag can be seen on the corner of McGill and Summit as usual.

Standing in support with Williams Lake First Nation (T’exelc), flags are lowered to half-mast on TRU campuses on Wednesday, Jan. 26, and the flag situated on the Campus Commons on the Kamloops campus has been replaced with the orange Every Child Matters flag, until further notice.

Nikhil Tiwari was a student in the Post-Baccalaureate in Supply Chain Management Diploma program in the School of Business and Economics. He came to TRU in 2019 from Mumbai, India with the dream of completing higher education in Canada. An excellent student, his goal was to open his own business. Outside classes, Nikhil worked alongside many of his friends for a food delivery company. Known for his courage and brave spirit, he kicked off the fall 2021 semester by sky-diving in Whistler, BC. Campus flags will be lowered from sunrise to sunset in his memory on Wednesday, Dec. 15.

Josef Buffalo was a student enrolled in the School of Trades and Technology's Trades Sampler program—an introduction to carpentry, plumbing and electrical trades—offered in collaboration with Neskonlith Indian Band. Josef enjoyed strong connections with his classmates and will be missed by family and friends both in the local area and in Alberta. Lloyd Bennett began teaching as a full-time instructor in 1979, and since then has taught art history and studio-based courses as a valued member and past chair of Visual and Performing Arts. Known for his profound commitment to both students and faculty, Lloyd served on Senate and held numerous positions in the TRU Faculty Association for over 13 years, where he devoted himself to listening and responding supportively to all his colleagues’ needs. After more than 40 years of teaching and service, he will be remembered by countless TRU colleagues and alumni. Anuradha (Anu) Kudagoda was a Post-Baccalaureate in Entrepreneurship student in the School of Business and Economics. From Sri Lanka, Anu loved studying in Canada and learning about the culture. He excelled in his program, making the Dean’s List in 2019 and 2020. Known for his love of art, photography, dancing and poetry, he explored his interests by participating in many clubs and societies both on and off campus. Anu had many friends at TRU and a very special relationship with one of the campus Elders, whom he considered his Canadian “Ma”. Aaron Manson was in his fourth year of a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and took great pride in being a TRU student. He loved to interact with faculty and admired their care and understanding, and the way they challenged him both personally and academically. Aaron himself cared deeply, made everyone he met feel appreciated and accepted, and attracted an amazing community of close friends. He spoke up strongly against injustice to both people and animals, and courageously battled mental health and substance use challenges. TRU’s campus flags are at half-mast and will remain this way for a total of 215 hours, in remembrance of the 215 children whose lives were lost at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. The lowering of the flags shows TRU’s support for Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc and this region's first peoples. Flags will remain lowered until Sunday, June 6.

Yuwei Gong was an international student at TRU, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree. He came to Kamloops from Wuhan, China four years ago at the age of 18, and dedicated himself to his studies, excelling in class. Both confident and courteous, he treated people with sincerity, and was always the one taking care of his friends. Yuwei will be forever missed by his loving family and many good friends in Canada and China. The campus flags will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset in his memory on May 11.

Leslie “Bucky” John shared his wealth of knowledge as a St̓át̓imcets language instructor in the Faculty of Education and Social Work's First Nations Language Teacher education program. He was committed to the St̓át̓imc language and culture, focused first on learners and serving others as an educator. He developed an extraordinary online class, hosting from the small towns where his students lived, bringing respect to the virtual space. Faculty and staff were honoured to work with him and will treasure their conversations with him. Campus flags will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Monday, March 29 in his memory.

Jennifer Brown was completing a Bachelor of Arts on campus and through Open Learning. She loved her studies and was eager to complete her degree in psychology. From Ontario, she was drawn to BC by the mountains and ocean. Her family is very proud of her commitment and how she pushed herself to achieve her goals, and will remember Jennifer as their hero. Susie Russo served Open Learning students as an awards advisor. Caring, compassionate and service-oriented, she also had an eye for detail and policy that was critical to the financial aspects of her position. She was often the social convenor for Financial Aid and Awards, and helped build the team's camaraderie. Beyond her work, Susie was an avid fundraiser, which occasionally resulted in a room full of daffodils for campus distribution. Her friends and colleagues will ever miss her sunny disposition, optimistic smile and easy-going, gentle demeanour. Susanna Fawkes first came to TRU as a student, completing a TESL certificate in 2006 and a Bachelor of Arts in 2007. Susanna’s passion for learning, zest for life, and commitment to family, friends and students will be dearly missed. Cathy Morris held a wide variety of staff positions across the Kamloops campus, most recently as a program assistant in the School of Business and Economics. Ivan Krishchanovych was a second-year student in the Bachelor of Science program. Calling himself “a curious Ukrainian soul learning science in Canada,” he arrived at TRU at the age of 17 with hopes and aspirations in the field of biology. Known as a quiet student with a beautiful smile, he was well-loved and will be dearly missed. The campus flags will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset in Ivan’s memory on June 15.

John (Ivica) Prpić was an Open Learning Faculty Member, teaching strategic management information systems in the Master of Business Administration program. An accomplished academic, author and speaker, John completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Western University, an MBA from Pepperdine University, and a PhD from Luleå University of Technology. He loved the pursuit of knowledge, but most of all he loved to teach. Friends and colleagues will remember his quick-witted humour, infectious laugh and zest for life. Awna DeHaan was a Class 1 driver training and Air Brakes instructor for TRU’s Columbia Transport commercial vehicle driving school and for the School of Trades and Technology. He joined TRU in 2008, after a 45-year career as a long haul commercial truck driver and owner/operator. A patient and thorough teacher, he loved his work and found great personal satisfaction in training students to become safe drivers. He will be remembered for his positive and happy demeanour and a unique sense of humour that brightened everyone’s day. The campus flags will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Nov. 24.

Michael Bourassa was a mature student pursuing a new career as a chef. He impressed both faculty and students in the Culinary Arts program, his quick wit, sense of humour and exceptional work ethic making him a leader who inspired his younger classmates. In November 2017, he received the Kamloops Rotary Culinary Arts Award, recognizing his great culinary potential. Bernard Igwe was a faculty member in English and Modern Languages for 28 years. A devoted teacher and mentor with wit, wisdom and an ever-present desire to help others, he acted with passion and compassion to all. He served as a UCC Faculty Association and TRU Faculty Association shop steward for 15 years, and was elected chief steward on three occasions. Shirley McCaffrey was a graphic designer in TRU Marketing and Communications for over twelve years, bringing her creative flair to materials for the TRU Foundation Gala, Actors Workshop Theatre productions, Athletics and many other areas. She spoke with pride about being involved in the redesign of everything from signage to stationery when TRU first became a university. An animal lover, she volunteered with animal rescue organizations in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and here in BC during the 2003 and 2017 wildfires, and helped promote Pilots N Paws. The campus flags will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Feb. 21.

Margaret (Marg) Spina was a Kamloops city councillor, Rotarian, volunteer and community champion. Her leadership and commitment in roles with the Thompson Valley Crisis and Counselling Centre, the Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism, the Kamloops Food Bank, and municipal government, made a difference in the lives of British Columbians for over 40 years. For her selfless service to others, including advocacy for the most vulnerable members of the community, she was nominated for a TRU honorary degree which was duly recommended by the Senate and approved by the Board of Governors last year for presentation at the June 2018 Convocation. Sadly this is not possible. The degree will be presented posthumously at her memorial service on Jan. 20, 2018. The campus flags will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset on that day.

Don Andrews served this community and university as a distinguished lawyer and philanthropist for over 60 years. He began practising law in Kamloops in 1951, forming Andrews, Taylor and Company, and was called to the bench in 1980. He was vice-president of legal affairs at Weyerhaeuser Canada from 1982 to 1996. A Rotary member for 46 years, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977 for his service to Royal Inland Hospital. His support was integral to the creation of TRU’s Faculty of Law. For enhancing the lives of so many, the university recognized him with an honorary doctorate in 2003. The campus flags will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Nov. 25.

Christopher Seguin joined TRU in 2007 as Vice-President of Advancement and since then was totally dedicated to the people of TRU and of Kamloops. Under his leadership, TRU set new fundraising records virtually every year of the last decade, generating millions of dollars for student awards, groundbreaking research and major buildings—notably the Brown Family House of Learning, the renovation of Old Main for the Faculty of Law, the new Industrial Training and Technology Centre and the soon-to-be-constructed Nursing and Population Health building. He helped thousands of students in realizing their dreams for education and a career through the bursaries and scholarships he helped donors create. Jason Callaghan was an Adventure Studies student who had just completed his first year while living in TRU Residence. He loved nature and adventure sports and always had boundless energy and curiosity. A strong member of the TRU Rez community, he was an enthusiastic volunteer. McCarthy, former Deputy Premier of British Columbia, who passed away on May 24, 2017. A member of the Order of Canada and Order of British Columbia, she was the first woman in Canada to serve as deputy premier (1975) and was a cabinet minister in the BC Legislature from 1975 to 1988.

Cameron Reid was an Open Learning faculty member and course developer. A former sessional in the Faculty of Arts, his colleagues had known him since 1999, when his late partner Dr. Rachel Nash first began teaching at TRU. His research interests were in critical pedagogy and contemporary continental philosophy, and his identity was very much grounded in writing. Sebastian Gardner was an assistant coach for WolfPack men’s soccer, a former midfielder and Bachelor of Social Work alumnus. A PACWEST all-star in 2012, he was forced to leave the game and his studies to battle cancer. His remarkable return to play his last season in 2013 culminated with a silver medal at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national championship. An admired and respected coach and social worker, he left a lasting impression on the many people whose lives he touched. Richard Wagamese (Buffalo Cloud) was an award-winning writer, journalist and author and a TRU honorary degree recipient (2010). He became the first Aboriginal Canadian to receive a National Newspaper Award and published 12 works about Indigenous culture from the perspective of his personal experience of Canada’s former residential school system. His acclaimed novel Indian Horse has been incorporated in English course curricula at TRU and several other universities. An inspirational, spiritual and dynamic storyteller, he received the Writers’ Trust of Canada Matt Cohen Award (2015) for his distinguished lifetime contribution to Canadian literature. Camilla Sears was an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. A criminologist, she had a special interest in the media’s role in shaping understandings of the criminal justice system, and in the use of restorative justice as a response to crime and conflict. Her courses in crime and deviance were popular and she had a profound influence on her students. Bryan Spencer was a University Preparation student who planned to go on in computing. His curiosity and friendly, considerate way with everyone he met will be remembered. Bryan would stop in to visit faculty members regularly, sharing his plans, progress, and passion for physics (and coffee). The Honourable Leonard S. Marchand was a shining example of collaboration for all Canadians. An Okanagan First Nation member, born in Vernon, BC in 1933, he was a lifelong advocate for Aboriginal rights, working on issues such as obtaining the federal vote, self-governance and improving education for First Nations. In 1968 he became the first status First Nations to be elected to the House of Commons when he won the riding of Kamloops-Cariboo. He was appointed to Canada’s Senate in 1984. TRU awarded him an honorary degree in 1999. The campus flags will be flown at half-mast until sunset on June 11, 2016.

A dedicated student with a passion for accounting, he was on a path to a Master of Business Administration. Robert (Bob) Madden, a warehouse storeperson in Purchasing, enjoyed serving student delivery needs at Open Learning in Burnaby for many years and was the first to sign up for the move to TRU in Kamloops. A well-known figure on his early morning deliveries around campus, he was a big man with a big heart. James Thomson joined the School of Nursing faculty in 2004, teaching in all four years of the nursing program—his dream job. He most recently served as the practice placement coordinator, responsible for arranging student placements in clinical practice settings. He was passionate about mental health, specifically the mental health challenges of Aboriginal populations. Completing his master’s degree alongside several fellow faculty members cemented warm and lasting friendships with his colleagues. Jeff Skosnik, adjunct professor in the School of Trades and Technology and CEO of the Line Contractors Association of BC, was instrumental in leading TRU to become the first public training school in BC to offer the Power Line Technician program. He also worked with Aboriginal learners to help them gain the knowledge and skills necessary to transition into trades training. Jeff felt that TRU’s “accessible university” approach was the way to help all people become what they wanted to be.
